Thanks for your patience as all of us, including those of us at GSN, navigate these unprecedented and uncertain times. The purpose of this communication is to provide information on the status of your abstract and paper contributions and to help you plan for a future meeting. As you likely know by now, GSN postponed the symposium until May 2-5, 2022. The 2022 venue will be the same (Nugget Resort in Sparks, Nevada), and we hope to continue with much of the technical and social programs that we had planned for 2020. Undoubtedly, there will be changes, but we’re working to minimize them as much as possible. Postponing the symposium a year requires us to reaffirm with each senior author that he/she will participate in 2022’s event.

Many of you have or will have questions regarding the status of your abstract or paper, or your registration. Feel free to contact us anytime; a contacts list is provided at the end of this letter. The bulleted summary below attempts to address some of the more common issues we expect.

Will GSN publish the existing abstracts and refereed papers this year?

GSN plans to publish all accepted abstracts and refereed papers in a special 2020 GSN proceedings volume available in June 2020. Why are we publishing abstracts and papers now? They contain time-sensitive information, are snap-shots of the current state of the science and industry, and were written with every intent to be published and presented. GSN received over 200 abstracts and nearly 80 papers. Papers have been peer-reviewed, edited multiple times, and are in the process of proofing; these represent thousands of hours of work on the part of authors, reviewers, and editors alike.

Who will get the 2020 proceedings?

If you registered for the full technical program for the 2020 meeting and continue to maintain your registration, you are eligible to receive a USB drive containing the 2020 proceedings (both papers and abstracts). Those canceling their registration by May 31, 2020 will receive a full refund for all items and events registered, and will not receive the 2020 proceedings. However, the 2020 proceedings will be available for separate purchase through the GSN symposium website ( starting June 1, 2020; cost of digital proceedings will be $100; printed proceedings (incl. USB): $250 plus shipping. If you pre-pay after June 1, 2020 for the publications, GSN will deduct the $100 from your 2021 full technical program registration.

Will there be a 2022 symposium proceedings?

Yes, there will be another published volume in time for the re-scheduled 2022 Symposium. The 2022 digital proceedings will contain both the 2020 and 2022 content of pdf-format papers and abstracts in separate folders. Both proceedings volumes will be provided as part of every full technical program registration. GSN has yet to determine whether there will be a printed 2022 volume.

Will GSN solicit for new papers and updates to existing papers for 2022?

Yes! We encourage those who considered submitting papers for 2020 but did not, as well as new authors, to submit manuscripts for publication in the 2022 proceedings. The 2022 Symposium will also be an excellent opportunity to provide updates on abstracts and papers submitted in 2020. More information will be forthcoming on 2022 abstract and paper submissions. We appreciate your continued support for our symposia!

I would like a refund. How do I get one?

Please check your email and the symposium website ( for instructions on how to change or cancel your registration. Only full refunds are being offered through May 31, 2020. Registration will open (again) January 4, 2021 for those who cancel their existing technical program registrations or who have yet to register for the meeting.

What about my hotel reservations at the Nugget for May 2020?

On March 20 we received this message from The Nugget Casino Resort: The Nugget Casino Resort has cancelled all reservations pertaining to the GSN 2020 Symposium.  You can expect to see your hotel deposit refund within 7 to 10 business days and there is no need to call the hotel directly.  We look forward to having you join us in 2021.
